Enlisted by a buddy to help sign people in during opera auditions, I had lots of time to doodle. Experiencing people wearing full-on black tie is just plain weird before noon. Definite types emerged throughout the day: nervous mezzos, overripe sopranos, puckish tenors, vampire baritones…

This was actually commissioned by a Parsons student who wanted to use an illustration on a book cover design. It never got much beyond the comp phase (the teacher scrapped the idea and forced a more traditional type-and-photo solution), but I kind of liked the goofy roughness and all-out bloody mess of it all, even in this early stage.

After being asked by a friend to sketch their baby for a birthday invitation, I discovered that babies are surprisingly hard to draw. This was an odd exercise — my babies all look totally different and slightly crazy.

My cat. He is generally grouchy and something of a badass. Yes, the Thundercats logo ended up in this too…

Transfixed by the old Discovery Channel dinosaur simulation documentary, I tried to capture some of the amazing color and texture of the ancient lizards that were roaring across my TV screen. Definitely a monster…

A sketch (and the later computer reproduction) of a tiger I did one day at the Natural History Museum. People are strange about tigers… as I was sketching, several people came up to me to tell me tiger stories — one girl enthusiastically told me that she works at a tiger preserve in Miami where I could come draw them in real life while she walked them around on a leash. What I found interesting was that in a museum gallery packed to the ceiling with animals on display (the wall behind me was crawling with what must have been hundreds of crustaceans), people were drawn most to the tiger.

Live Sketches. I was at a live model sketching session at Parsons and got restless. The models all looked unhappy and restless, and kept striking odd poses. So, to make things more interesting for myself (there was no saving them), I started drawing them as fantasy-type creatures instead.

About:

This site is a small showcase of my sketches. If you need something drawn, feel free to contact me at nealteak [at] gmail [dot] com

I am a graphic and web designer, writer and editor who does illustration casually on the side under the pseudonym Neal Teak. This site is not linked to my professional site because it's just for fun. I sketch, it keeps my creative mind alive, and part of me will always regret not following my high school dream of becoming an animator. I have fun with my sketchbook, and, if you're bothering to glance through these images, I hope you do too. Cheers.
